Digital literacies by adaptive learning

An online, adaptive learning approach to teach digital literacies.

Students in three Health units are learning digital literacies using an online, self-paced, adaptive approach. The Library worked with unit chairs in each of the units to develop and adapt a series of scenario-based interactive modules using Smart Sparrow software. The Library were early adopters of the software and have continued to use it extensively. The modules are readily adaptable to other units and provide rich data on how students engage with and progress through the series.

In their first iteration, in HNN108 Understanding Research Evidence—a high enrolment, first level core Nursing unit with high numbers of low socioeconomic status (LSES) students—the modules were:

  • Introduction to evidence-based practice
  • Resources for research
  • Asking the clinical question
  • Qualitative research
  • Quantitative research
  • Translating research into practice.
