Introduction to University Study (AIX160) is designed to welcome and support students in their first trimester of university study, building their confidence and skills in managing themselves as students and in completing typical academic tasks. The curriculum applies Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, giving students choices around the area of interest they will pursue in their assessments and providing a variety of learning methods and media. Activities to develop academic and digital literacies are embedded throughout, and the unit is team-taught by librarians and language and learning advisers along with academics.

Several features of the unit existed in its previous iteration under a different code and name. A collaborative team including Faculty of Arts and Education academics, librarians, language and learning advisers, a learning designer, a project manager and a UDL consultant built on these successes while also integrating UDL and embedded literacies in their 2014 redesign. Several of the unit development partners continue to be involved in ongoing unit evaluations and readjustments. The partnerships underpinning this unit have been acknowledged in Vice Chancellor’s and Faculty awards.
