‘Getting started’ videos in digital literacy
Getting students started in digital literacies using short, light online videos.
Twelve short, animated videos explain clearly and simply how to access and use Library resources and other sources of information efficiently. These are available on the Library’s YouTube channel.
Titles include:
- Getting started at Deakin University library
- Finding information by keywords
- Viewing an e-book
- Finding a known journal or journal article (Harvard) (also versions for Oxford and APA)
- Finding a known book or book chapter (Harvard) (also versions for Oxford and APA)
- Finding it on the shelf
- Borrowing material
- Using Findit@Deakin
The Library identified digital literacy and general Library skills with which many students seemed to have the most trouble and developed the first video in-house, with professional assistance. The Library storyboarded and scripted the videos, but engaged a commercial video maker to develop the remaining videos. The Library piloted the videos with students before promoting them widely.
