Melbourne’s lockdown to be lifted with adjusted restrictions – but continue to study from home if you can
Current Metropolitan Melbourne restrictions will ease significantly as of 11:59pm tonight, Thursday 10 June, with the potential for further easing of restrictions next week, subject to a continued decrease in risk from the current outbreak.
In Melbourne, there is now a 25km travel limit, with the removal of rules restricting your reason to leave home.
What you need to know
- The five reasons to leave home have been removed – you can leave home for any reason.
- Intrastate travel limit has increased to 25km; however, travel to regional Victoria remains restricted. The travel limit does not apply when travelling is for required study or your work.
- Masks required indoors and outdoors, except if you have an exemption and in your private home. Masks must be carried at all times.
- Public gatherings are permitted for up to 10 people.

If you do need to attend campus, you must:
- mask are still required to be worn indoors and outdoors and must be carried at all times.
- adhere to all COVIDSafe practices, including check-in via the COVIDSafe QR codes.
- self-check and stay home if you’re unwell – use the Symptom Checker testing and quarantine guidance.
- complete Deakin’s COVIDSafe module before attending a campus for the first time.
- maintain good hand hygiene and use the hand sanitiser available.
How this applies to the Burwood campus and your learning
Some on-campus services will be available; however, limitations apply:
- Student Central will open from Monday 14 June.
- Burwood Library will be open from Friday 11 June, for students and staff with capacity restrictions apply with limited hours 8am-9pm 7 days at present.
- Deakin Learning Centres will be open from Monday 14 June; capacity restrictions apply.
- Deakin Medical Centres are open for free and confidential face-to-face or telehealth consultations. By appointment only – book online or by phone.
- DUSA Bookshop open from Tuesday 15 June.
- Limited café services are operating.
Please note DeakinACTIVE – Burwood Fitness Centre remains closed.
What this means for your study
All exams scheduled continue as planned, including those students with scheduled on-campus exams.
Approved student health and medical placements, including beyond the 25km limit, will continue where partner institutions remain open, and communication will be managed directly by your teaching area.
Students with scheduled work-integrated learning will be contacted through your unit site or by a Work Integrated Learning Coordinator.
Trimester 2/Semester 2 learning
T2/S2 teaching and learning planning are continuing. Read more about what your T2/S2 learning experience will be, subject to government restrictions. The provisional timetable will be available on Monday 14 June and open for preference entry mode in STAR at 10am on Monday 21 June.

Rest assured that help is still available during this time – you can continue to access a range of Deakin support services online:
- Student Central: If you have a question about your enrolment or course, finances or other issues, contact Student Central by phone or submit an online enquiry or visit a Student Central Hub on campus from Monday 14 June.
- Deakin Library: The library is open. You can also contact the library via Library Chat, email or phone. There are reduced hours (8am-9pm 7 days at present), and capacity restrictions apply. Access is restricted to students and staff, so please carry your Deakin ID card when attending.
- Study Support: Access a range of academic and study support online, including help from Language and Learning Advisers, Writing and Maths Mentors, and Smarthinking.
- Learning Centres: Will re-open from Monday 14 June.
- IT Help: For any issues with CloudDeakin tools and other technologies, access IT Help online or over the phone, Monday to Friday, 8am–8pm, and weekends, 11am–5pm.
- Deakin Medical Centres: Remain open for free and confidential face-to-face or telehealth consultations. By appointment only – book online or by phone.
- Counselling and Psychological Support (CAPS): Telehealth appointments only. Students located in Australia can talk to one of our highly skilled social workers and psychologists – book online or by phone.
- Safer Community: If you feel unsafe or need to report sexual harm or family violence, contact the Safer Community team online, by phone or by email.
- Disability Resource Centre (DRC): The DRC is available Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm via phone or email.
- Multifaith Chaplains: Contact your preferred Multifaith Chaplain via phone or email for a confidential chat.
