You may also find the following information helpful.
I received an incomplete grade (RI, RIA, RIE or RW)
An incomplete grade means that we have not yet been able to finalise your grade for the official result release:
- Result incomplete (RI): for some reason, your final grade could not be finalised by the result release date. An RI is usually resolved within 10 days of the official result release date. Check your unit site for any update from your Unit Chair or explanation of why some components of your assessment aren’t finalised.
- Result not finalised – special assessment task (RIA): you’ve been granted a special end-of-unit assessment task after applying for special consideration. Check your unit site for an update from your Unit Chair.
- Result not finalised – special examination (RIE): you’ve been granted a special examination after applying for special consideration. You’ll sit this exam in the T1 supplementary and special end-of-unit assessment and exam period (Monday 31 July to Friday 4 August). The timetable for this period will be released on Wednesday 19 July.
- Result withheld (RW): your result has been withheld. This result is applied where concerns have been raised that a student may have failed to meet or to promote Deakin’s academic integrity standards. These concerns will be investigated to determine what further actions need to be taken. If you received this grade, you’ll be contacted via your Deakin email with further details.
I received a fail grade (N)
Failing a unit can be upsetting, but you have options:
- Talk to a Student Adviser about planning your course to give you the best chance of success.
- Check your units in the next study period in case the unit you failed is a prerequisite for one of your next units. If it is, and you want to replace it with another unit, use the 2023 University Handbook and your course map to find an alternative unit that will count towards your degree.
- If you think your work wasn’t appropriately marked according to the criteria, or your marks weren’t added up correctly to obtain your final grade, you can apply for a review of your results.
- Consider what happened with your study – do you need help with writing assignments or sitting exams? Investigate our Study Support services to see what could benefit you.
- If you have other financial or personal concerns, we might be able to help. Check out our financial assistance, counselling and disability support services.
- If this isn’t the first unit you’ve failed, you may need to consider your academic progress, especially if you have a CSP or use HECS-HELP/FEE-HELP, as your ongoing enrolment may be affected.

Failing a unit may have implications for your visa and your enrolment in the next study period. If you require a CoE extension, apply online – if it’s approved, you should receive it within 10 working days. If you have questions about your enrolment, visa or other support, contact a Student Adviser for personalised advice.
