Six things you didn’t know about graduation day from recent graduates

Over the last two weeks, the February round of graduation ceremonies have been taking place in Costa Hall, Geelong. Here, students’ years long journey and all their hard work to complete their courses and earn their awards is celebrated.

While we all probably have an idea in our heads what graduations will be like, based on tv and movies, we asked some graduates from our most recent ceremonies to share their own experiences of what they found unexpected about their ceremonies.

DIMA ABUSHAAR, Bachelor of Biomedical Science.

You get to keep your hat, which is actually called a trencher.

JOSH SCOLERI, Bachelor of Science (Animal Biology)

You’ll be surprised about how good the gown drip makes you look. I was shocked.

Your parents will treat you like it’s your first day of school.

EMMA BADROCK, Bachelor of Biomedical Science

The regalia is really hot, especially on a day like this. But the good news is that in the hall, it’s nice and air conditioned.

What else to expect on graduation day

You should arrive at least two hours before your ceremony’s start to give you plenty of time to register, be fit with your regalia and take any photographs you’d like to. We recommend you wear smart, neat or professional clothing.

Find out more, including instructions, a schedule, proper etiquette and the order of ceremony proceedings on the Graduation attending your ceremony webpage.

You’ll receive specific details about your ceremony leading up to your graduation, so make sure to check your Deakin inbox regularly.
