Choose to challenge gender inequality this International Women’s Day
Monday 8 March is International Women’s Day (IWD), which is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s also a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
This year’s theme is #ChooseToChallenge. As individuals, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions. We can choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. From challenge comes change; collectively, we can all help to create an inclusive world.

What’s happening at Deakin for IWD 2021
There’s a number of ways you can show your support for IWD.
Attend a virtual screening of Picture a scientist
Did you know that far fewer women have careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) than men? Of all higher education enrolments in 2018, nine percent of women studied STEM, compared with 35 percent of men.
Picture a scientist is a compelling documentary focusing on women in STEM professions who seek gender equality and visibility. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks and geologist Jane Willenbring share their experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights.
From cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we also meet scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse and equitable.
