New publication from Deakin Criminologist Dr Diarmaid Harkin
Diarmaid Harkin has published a paper with Dr Kath Murray (University of Edinburgh) in the British Journal of Criminology entitled ‘Policing in Cool and Hot Climates: Legitimacy, Power and the Rise and Fall of Mass Stop and Search in Scotland‘. Based on the headline-making research of Dr Kath Murray, the authors argue that mass stop and search in Scotland was allowed to prosper under a lax and ‘cool’ climate of scrutiny for Scottish policing. This subsequently changed in 2013 when the SNP government amalgamated Scotland’s eight police forces into one, inadvertently mobilising critical attention towards policing matters.
