Dr Danielle Tyson appears on ABC 7.30 Report to discuss why a woman who killed her violent husband should not be deported

Dr Danielle Tyson was interviewed by journalist Lauren Day for ABC’s 7.30 report about why a woman who killed her violent husband should not be deported. The full interview can be accessed from the ABC 7.30 Report website. The online news article can be accessed from the ABC news website.

Dr Tyson has extensively researched intimate partner homicides and said that mandatory cancellation of a person’s visa where that person has commited a crime as the result of a history of domestic violence perpetrated against them by their male partner, is inappropriate and a very bad look for the Australian government. In Eilieen Creamer’s case, the Immigration Minister is in effect punishing her twice. Eileen Creamer has served her term of imprisonment, she is not a threat to wider society, she is a victim of domestic violence who killed in a situation that is vastly different to someone who commits a premediated act of lethal violence. The research was funded by the Victorian Women’s Benevolent Trust and the Legal Services Board of Victoria and can be downloaded from the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria website.
