Criminology success in latest APA Scholarship round
We are very excited to announce that two Deakin criminology students have been awarded APA Scholarships to undertake a PhD in Criminology at Deakin beginning in 2014. Both Ryan Thorneycroft and Jessica Saglieri were awarded the three year scholarships in the latest round announced this week.
Ryan completed his honours degree in criminology at Deakin University this year. Ryan’s PhD research, ‘Disabilist Violence, Victimisation and the Regulation of Prejudice‘, focuses on the phenomenon of disabilist hate crime, which refers to criminal acts committed, at least in part, because of someone’s real or perceived disability status. Disabilist hate crime is widely under-reported, so this research seeks to shed greater light on this phenomenon. The research will investigate the critical issues faced by victims, police responses, and contextualise the scope and extent of its occurrence. This research will be completed under the primary supervision of Dr Nicole Asquith.
Jess completed her Honours degree in criminology at Deakin University in 2012.
We are very excited to welcome both Ryan and Jess to the Deakin Criminology Team!
