NAVIGATE: support for autistic students while you settle into uni life
Are you new to Deakin this trimester? If so, welcome – we hope you enjoy a great start to uni life!
While you’re likely very excited to get started with your studies, we know that adjusting to university can feel a little overwhelming for everyone. There’s a lot to learn and new routines to be established. It’s common for new students to take some time to feel settled at uni.
If you are autistic, the process may feel even more challenging. That’s why we offer additional support through our NAVIGATE program.
Here’s how NAVIGATE can help you adjust to uni
NAVIGATE pairs experienced and friendly student mentors with autistic students to support their transition to studying at Deakin.
- Your mentor will meet with you for at least 30 minutes, once a week, for your first trimester.
- In your second trimester, you will have the opportunity to continue meeting with your mentor, and/or other NAVIGATE mentors via group sessions.
Your mentor is a student just like you. They’ll be able to answer any questions and address any concerns you may have about your experience at Deakin, such as:
- using DeakinSync and other online tools
- finding classrooms and lecture theatres
- using the library, both on campus and online
- writing and submitting assignments
- linking you to study support resources
- getting information about Deakin clubs and societies
- using your student card
- simply needing to see a friendly face around campus!
