Choose to reuse: Select food venues offer discount for BYO containers!

In a move to grow their commitment to sustainability, selected venues at our Waurn Ponds and Burwood campuses have announced a new initiative aimed at reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices.

Commencing Monday 12 August, these venues will offer a 20% discount to customers who bring their own clean containers for eat-in or takeaway food*.

Participating venues include:

Burwood Campus

Waurn Ponds Campus

How it works

To qualify for the discount, customers need to present a clean container when they place their order. Containers must be free from stains, odours, and remnants of previous meals. Staff will inspect the containers to ensure they are clean before accepting them for use, to ensure food safety standards are met.

Accepted containers include:

*This discount cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotions and can be withdrawn or varied without notice at any time. Standard serving sizes apply.

Why choose reusable?

Switching to reusable items is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways, to reduce waste and support sustainability efforts at our university.

Food packaging items, such as disposable containers, labelled as ‘compostable’ or ‘biodegradable’ belong in landfill, as they require very specialised conditions to break down which are not available in most composting facilities. These containers made up a considerable portion of the 800 tonnes of waste Deakin sent to landfill in 2023.

The good news is that since 2023, Deakin staff and students have already purchased 44,000 discounted coffees in reusable cups and extending a discount to reusable containers gives us an even greater opportunity to reduce our impact, and work towards a circular economy.
