International students: learn how to manage homesickness and your mental health
We know that university isn’t always easy. When you’re studying away from home, new routines and unfamiliar places can feel a little overwhelming. It’s also very common to experience feelings of homesickness as you adapt to living in a new country.
That’s why we encourage you to join our upcoming international student workshop about looking after your mental health. This online session is being offered as part of our International Student Connect program and will be facilitated by the preventative mental health organisation batyr.
The session is designed to show you how other students have managed their mental health experiences in positive ways and to equip you with tools that can help you make the most of your experience at Deakin.
Register now to hear from an international student about what supported them along their mental health journey, plus learn some practical strategies to help you achieve and maintain positive mental health.

Remember support is always available
We offer a range of health and wellbeing services to support you as a student. For urgent help outside of business hours, contact Lifeline (13 11 14) or SuicideLine (1300 651 251) straight away. They’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Our International Student Connect program also gives you lots of other opportunities to meet new people, and to get to know Deakin and the local community. If this is your first trimester as an international student at Deakin, we encourage you to try as many activities as possible – you’ll make new friends, practise your English skills, explore your campus, discover Deakin’s support services and learn about Australian culture.
We also encourage you to get involved next week for Mind Matters – Deakin’s mental wellbeing movement event. We want to make mental health a priority for everyone, not just those who experience mental illness. Running throughout Week 4 – from Monday 29 July to Friday 2 August – Mind Matters offers helpful information, strategies and resources to enhance your mental health. See the full program and get involved.
