Learn more about gender equality from these awesome Deakin women
Wednesday 8 March is International Women’s Day (IWD). This global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women is a chance for organisations to embrace and cultivate an ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. It’s also a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
This year’s United Nations theme is #Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender-equal future. This highlights the role that bold and transformative ideas, inclusive technologies and access to education can play in overcoming generational and systemic gender-based discrimination.
Here’s how you can be part of the change.
Celebrate some women of Deakin
There’s so many incredible female-identifying staff, students and alumni in the Deakin community, so we’re taking this opportunity to showcase some of their experiences and insights via the digital technology at our campus libraries. From experiences of discrimination to their proudest achievements, we hope you’ll enjoy what they have to share.
Here’s a little sample:
My name is Rachael, I am 22 and I am following my childhood dream of working in horticulture. Growing up on a farm with three out of my five family members being in a trade I aspired to be like them; however, they’re all males and I predicted I wouldn’t be given a chance. Despite my gender, Deakin gave me a chance and I am now in my third and final year of my apprenticeship. An apprenticeship and opportunity which has changed my life.
Head to your campus library to check out all the onscreen profiles and learn from their stories and insights. Profiles will be displayed from Monday 6 to Friday 10 March. On IWD itself, you can also grab a free tote bag (with bonus rainbow lanyard and pen) while you view the displays! Just visit the library between 11am and 1pm on Wednesday 8 March – stocks are limited, so get in early!
Can’t make it to campus? You can also check out the profiles online.
