NAVIGATE: help for autistic students
Welcome to Trimester 1/Semester 1! If you’re new to Deakin this year, we hope this is the start of a successful and enjoyable experience for you.
While you’re no doubt excited to be beginning your studies, we know that adjusting to university is a big deal for everyone. There’s a lot to absorb – including new routines, different ways of learning, and unfamiliar environments and people – and it can take some time to find your feet.
This process can be even more challenging for autistic students. That’s why we offer autistic students additional support through our NAVIGATE program.
What is NAVIGATE?
NAVIGATE pairs experienced and friendly student mentors with autistic students to support their transition to studying at Deakin.
Your mentor will meet with you for at least 30 minutes, once a week, for your first trimester. In your second trimester, you will have the opportunity to continue meeting with your mentor, and/or other NAVIGATE mentors via group sessions.
Your mentor is a student just like you, so they’ll be able to answer any questions and address any concerns you may have about your experience at Deakin, such as:
- using DeakinSync and other online tools
- finding classrooms and lecture theatres
- using the library, both on campus and online
- writing and submitting assignments
- linking you to study support resources
- getting information about Deakin clubs and societies
- using your student card
- simply needing to see a friendly face around campus!
I’d like to know more!
If you would like some more information about NAVIGATE, email [email protected] and one of our coordinators will make contact with you.
You can also find more information on the NAVIGATE webpage alongside other Deakin services to support your health and wellbeing.
