Who are Goanna?
Formed in the 1980s in Geelong, the four-piece band helped forge a new Australian identity with lyrics often forming a social protest on current issues, from commentary on Indigenous land rights to the importance of environmental protection.
You’ve probably heard their most iconic track, Solid Rock, on multiple Melbourne rock radio stations! Characterised by catchy guitar hooks and a heavy percussive beat, it’s music with a message and was written after vocalist Shane Howard experienced a ‘spiritual awakening’ at Uluru in the early ‘80s and wanted to highlight the injustice of Australia’s Indigenous people.

This year, to commemorate Spirit of Place, current members including Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge will reignite the Goanna spirit and perform the final show of their upcoming tour at Costa Hall (Waterfront Campus) on Friday 19 November.
Did you know Howard’s passion for the environment actually began at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds Campus? Howard worked as an assistant groundskeeper nurturing native trees on the campus, in addition to serving as a student president. His interested in the environment continued to be prevalent throughout his career as evident in his songwriting.
Goanna will be joined by special guests Luke Biscan, son of the late lead guitarist Mike Biscan who played in the first incarnation of Goanna and was also Deakin alumni. They’ll also be joined by musical artist Mick Ryan, a proud Ngarrindjeri and Gunditjmarra man who has been performing live for more than 20 years.
