What does ‘reconciliation’ mean to you? Share your thoughts for the chance to be published!

The word ‘reconciliation’ resonates powerfully for many people in Australia. According to Reconciliation Australia:

At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.

It’s an ongoing journey to remedy past wrongs and create meaningful change for Indigenous Australians. In a formal sense, reconciliation is based and measured on five interrelated dimensions:

The State of Reconciliation in Australia Report tracks progress against these five dimensions and defines some practical actions that need to be taken if we are to continue to progress reconciliation.

We want to hear YOUR voice

But what does reconciliation mean to you? How does it exist in, or form, your daily life? How would stronger race relations change your lived experience as a university student, family member, friend, teammate or colleague?

As part of National Reconciliation Week (Friday 27 May to Friday 3 June), we’d love to hear from a range of students – both Indigenous and non-Indigenous – on the theme of reconciliation. This may cover broad issues like national identity, truth-telling, historical acceptance, culture and equality, but may also be a very personal account of your own perspective or experience.

Just submit a piece of creative writing (500 words or less) on what reconciliation means to you and you could see your name in print! The winner will be published in the September 2022 edition (37) of Verandah magazine, while two runners-up will receive a $50 voucher to spend at TradingBlak.

Email your entry to [email protected] by Tuesday 7 June – full terms and conditions below.
