The Deakin community is united in support of our Afghan students
Our international students are a very important part of the Deakin community, and we are distressed to hear of the worrying developments in Afghanistan, which are occurring in addition to the enormous challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
You or someone you know may be impacted by this situation and we want to remind you that you are an important part of our Deakin community, and you are not alone. Our thoughts and concern are with all people affected and we encourage you to reach out for support during this difficult time.
We are taking a personal approach to supporting students through this very challenging time. If you are affected and need support, please contact one of the Deakin services below.
Student Central
Student Central is the starting point to assist you, with the ability to prioritise the support you need. By contacting Student Central, you will be provided with advice, referral and support tailored to your needs. You can talk to Student Central about your current enrolment, course requirements and other enrolment needs.
Assignment extensions
If you need more time to complete your assessment tasks, please discuss this with your Unit Chairs in the first instance. They will be best placed to advise you of the assignment extensions or special consideration that is available to you.
Academic and study support
We want to help all students achieve their study outcomes and goals. A range of fantastic help is available through our Study Support resources and programs.
If you need an assignment extension or want to discuss special consideration, contact the relevant academic teaching team in your unit site.
Financial support
A range of financial assistance options are available – see the financial assistance webpage for more information. Our staff will assess your individual circumstances. You can contact a Financial Assistance Officer through Student Central.
Health and wellbeing support
During such a difficult time, it is essential that you look after your physical and mental health and wellbeing. If you’re located in Australia, you can access the following services:
- Deakin Medical Centre – initial consultations are free with your Overseas Health Cover (OSHC).
- Counselling and Psychological Support (CAPS) – free and confidential support from qualified counsellors and social workers.
- Disability support – if you have a disability, health or mental health condition that affects your study or participation in uni life, the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) can help with information and services.
- Multifaith chaplains – offering compassionate support to everyone, whether you’re religious or not.
DUSA support
Deakin’s student union can help you in a range of ways, including through student advocacy and legal services.
Specialist international student support
The International Student Support (ISS) team can help you with other questions you may have and can connect you with other key services at Deakin or within the community. If the information above does not meet your needs please contact Student Central, who can assess your situation and refer you to an International Student Support Officer (ISSO).
The support of the entire Deakin community is with everyone impacted.
