My favourite quote
‘The only advice, indeed, that one person can give another about reading is to take no advice, to follow your own instincts, to use your own reason, to come to your own conclusions.’ – Virginia Woolf
Some of my favourite resources
1. Scopus
Scopus is our largest abstract database. It is multidisciplinary but especially great for scientific research literature, and it has excellent features that allow you to track citations, follow key authors and discover related research. It also has great visualisation features to help you analyse the literature to uncover new insights.
2. GreenFILE
A must for those studying environmental science, Ebsco’s GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. This resource offers perspectives on the positive and negative ways humans affect the environment. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet.
ScienceDirect is a database that provides access to citations and full text journal articles, e-books and book chapters across a range of science and social science disciplines. This database is a great all-rounder for science students. For easy browsing, journals are grouped into four main sections: Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities.
This page on the library website is a great first-stop for those who aren’t sure where to start with an assessment, or for anyone looking for tools, techniques or guidance to help with research. The ‘Prepare and Plan’ section will help set you on the right path for beginning an assessment or embarking on finding quality information.
5. Kanopy
Kanopy is an on-demand streaming video platform for films and documentaries. In addition to heaps of great educational content, there are lots of excellent movies available for you to watch in your down-time. If you’ve exhausted your Netflix watch list, or are looking for something different, head to Kanopy!
My favourite recent book
I’m working my way through Ali Smith’s wonderful seasonal quartet – start with Autumn.
