The best ways to borrow and manage library items

Your library is open and buzzing with new students! We know many of you haven’t been on campus for a long time, and we’re excited to welcome you back.

Over the past year, we have made some exciting updates online and on campus to how you can access our collection. There are lots of ways you can borrow and manage library items, whether you’re studying on campus or in the Cloud.

Borrow library items

Use the Deakin Borrow app
Find the item you want on the shelf, open Deakin Borrow on your phone and scan the barcode. Three steps, and you’ve borrowed a library item! The first time you download Deakin Borrow, you’ll need to scan your Deakin Card ID or enter the number to log in.

Deakin Borrow also lets you view your account and manage your loans and holds.

Use ‘Click and Collect’
If you’re browsing the collection online and find an item you want, select the ‘Request It’ button. If you’re a campus-based student, you can then choose to click and collect the item at your local campus. If you’re a Cloud Campus, PhD or Disability Resource Centre-registered student, you can request free postal delivery.

Use self-checkouts on campus
Each library has at least one self-checkout machine that offers step-by-step instructions to guide you through. Just remember to physically distance while waiting in the queue, and maintain good hygiene before and after using the shared surface.

Manage your borrowed items

Visit ‘My Account’ on the library website
In addition to the Deakin Borrow app, you can visit this section of the library website to see the items you have on hold, check due dates for loaned items, browse your favourite searches and explore your reading history.

Just make sure you’ve opted in to your reading history to keep a record of all the items you’ve borrowed throughout your time at Deakin!

Return items on time
Most general loans in the library are now automatically renewed, which means as long as no one else has requested the item you borrowed, it’ll be renewed a few days before it’s due! You should receive an email confirming your new due date or letting you know that the item has to be returned if it was requested by another user.

Loan periods vary depending on your student cohort and the type of item you borrow. You can find out more on our ‘Borrow from our libraries’ page.
