So what’s it like being a Maths Mentor, you ask?

Maths Mentor Jennifer TranCurrent student and Senior Maths Mentor Jennifer Tran gave us her insights into what she enjoys about being a Maths Mentor.

I became a Maths Mentor because I love numbers and am passionate about helping others. I did not know about the Maths Mentors until my friend told me about it in my first year of university. Once he had described the mentoring program to me, I knew I had to apply and that it would be an excellent opportunity to get involved with other Deakin students and the university.

My favourite thing about being a Maths Mentor is what I describe as the ‘light-bulb moment’. This is basically when students who are struggling with a problem suddenly understand, and everything falls into place.

It is very rewarding to see students build up their confidence, self-esteem and problem-solving skills.

This role has provided me with MANY opportunities to develop myself, personally and professionally, which I don’t think would have been possible if I hadn’t joined the Maths Mentors. Joining the Maths Mentors early on allowed me to experience my first professional job and laid down the foundation of what was expected of me professionally, and aided me in developing my personal characteristics. I am forever grateful to everyone at Maths Mentors for helping me grow, not only as a professional but also as a person.

What would I say to eligible students who may be thinking about applying to become a Maths Mentor? Apply. Apply. Apply. You will not regret it. The team you will be working with, and the support provided, is amazing!
