Ease your way into T1 with our on-campus mindfulness and meditation classes

Bring on Trimester 1! If you’re just starting out at Deakin, we know the first few weeks can feel as overwhelming as they are exciting, while our more seasoned students are no doubt gearing up to tackle another round of fresh units.

Studying new subjects calls for a blend of curious exploration and fine-tuned focus, in which we need to be able to set aside any everyday worries and overlapping priorities to concentrate on the task at hand. Study aside, learning to be present in the current moment – aka mindful – has powerful implications for our overall health and wellbeing.

What is mindfulness all about?

Have you ever noticed that when you are doing quite familiar and/or repetitive tasks, like driving or scrolling social media, that your mind is often miles away thinking about something else? You may be fantasising about a holiday, worrying about some upcoming event, or thinking about any number of other things. In any case you are not really in touch with your current experience.

Mindfulness is about living in the now. It is essentially about being more intentionally aware and awake in every moment of your life, and being fully engaged in whatever is happening both around you and within you. It involves bringing an attitude of curiosity, acceptance and friendliness to whatever is experienced, and offers a way of freeing oneself from automatic and unhelpful ways of thinking and responding.

We all juggle various responsibilities in our day-to-day lives which compete for our attention. Could you use some help striking the right balance and tuning into the ‘here and now’?

We’ll be holding four weekly mindfulness and meditation classes at the Burwood and Waurn Ponds campuses, beginning in Week 2.

The classes will be facilitated by members of the Student Psychological Programs and Services team and are based on evidence-based techniques designed to help you reduce stress, improve concentration, manage your emotions and cope with any challenges you may encounter in your life. Each week we’ll cover a different theme to introduce you to different mindfulness techniques:
