Vale Graeme Kinross-Smith

Graeme Kinross-Smith, Honorary Fellow in the School of Communication and Creative Arts, sadly passed away on 27th August 2021, aged 84 years. Graeme’s presence and generosity as a colleague and a mentor was long appreciated at the Waurn Ponds campus. Graeme was the first Lecturer in Creative Writing in Australia at the Gordon Institute of Technology in Geelong, before joining the staff at Deakin University, from which he retired as a senior lecturer in 1991. In the subsequent years as an Honorary Fellow, Graeme was a tireless supporter and educator of young writers and the staff in Literature and Writing.

In addition to his long association with Deakin, Graeme was an important writer. His major works include Australia’s Writers (1980), the novel Long Afternoon of the World (2007), and the collection of poetry, Available Light (2012). He was also known as a photographer, jazz aficionado, tennis player, and swimmer. Graeme will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues.
