Regional Commissioned Artists in Verandah 36

This year for the first time there are four commissioned artists in Verandah 36 Intersections: Literary and Art Journal, a publication of the Verandah imprint through the School of Communication and Creative Arts based at Deakin.

Sarah Walker is a Geelong-based writer, artist and photographer. She makes work about anxiety, control and intimacy in text, video and immersive sound across Australia and internationally. She is a Walkley-nominated essayist and critic, co-hosted the podcast Contact Mic and is also one of Australia’s most experienced arts photographers. Check her work at: https://sarahwalker.work/

Dr Deanne Gilson is a proud Wadawurrung woman, emerging elder and a multi-media visual artist. Dr Gilson is a graduate from Deakin University, her research redefining Aboriginal women’s business, through contemporary art. Dr Gilson has also been a finalist in the 66th Blake Prize. Shokoofah Azar is an author and former journalist with about 30 years of experience. They moved to Australia in 2010 as an asylum seeker after being arrested several times by the Iranian authority for their journalism activities. Their first novel in English, The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree, was published in 2017.

Jessi Rebel is a proud Wiradjuri woman, currently living on Wadawurrung Country. They are a passionate surfer, youth worker and emerging artist. They are a strong advocate for mental health and are currently studying the Bachelor of Arts Therapy, combining their love for art and understanding the importance of mental health and the healing journey. The Verandah 36 team applied for a City of Greater Geelong Council arts grant to further engagement with differing perspectives on intersectionality, the theme for the journal this year. The support of the City of Greater Geelong Council is acknowledged as being vital to this initiative, and to emerging artists.
