Gilbert Caluya

Gilbert researches and teaches on the intersections of gender, sexuality, and race in culture and society. His research examines the relationship between intimacy, security and citizenship across various cultural domains. He has a decade of research experience across four postdoctoral fellowships, ARC-funded research as well as industry-funded projects, and he is currently on a joint ARC-funded project on harnessing diasporic youth’s digital practices for teaching global digital citizenship. 

Gilbert is a Lecturer in Gender and Sexuality Studies in the Writing, Literature and Culture Group and is a co-convenor of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Research Network. His specific research interests include: the cultural politics of intimacy (including romance, domesticity, and desire); gendered and sexual subcultures; racial and ethnic minorities; everyday/popular cultures; cultures of security and surveillance; and feminist, queer, critical race, postcolonial and decolonial theory. Gilbert previously served on board of the Cultural Studies Association of Australasia and on the editorial board of the journal Gender, Culture and Place.
