Deakin University Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers: opens early May

Exciting news: Deakin’s School of Communication and Creative Arts is sponsoring a new prize for young Australian writers.  The Deakin University Nonfiction Prize, presented in partnership with Express Media, is open to Australian writers aged 30 and under.

Since its genesis in 2013, when it began as a joint venture between Scribe Publications and Express Media, the Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers has helped nurture the careers of several talented young writers.

“Many excellent projects have come from our collaboration over the past six years,” says Henry Rosenbloom Scribe’s founder and publisher. “We’re delighted to have supported the prize for as long as we did. We’re equally delighted that the prize will continue, and wish Express Media and Deakin all the best with the next phase.”

Deakin University and Express Media are thrilled to continue the legacy of this prize by offering the winning writer a payment of $3000. In addition, all writers shortlisted for the 2019 prize will receive:

  • an invitation to an exclusive craft development masterclass with some of Australia’s best nonfiction writers;
  • personalised feedback on their entry from the judges;
  • a generous selection of new-release books tailored to their reading interests.

The prize opens in early May (date to be announced), and closes on Sunday 8 September. Keep your eye on the Express Media website for updates, guidelines and submission details.

“We are thrilled to partner with Deakin University in 2019 to continue supporting young writers from across Australia with a Nonfiction Writing Prize,” says Lucy Hamilton, CEO/General Manager of Express Media. “We are so thankful to the team at Scribe for their passion and dedication to this Prize since its inception, and would love to particularly recognize the work of Julia Carlomagno and Joe Toohey in setting up the Prize. We look forward to working closely with Deakin University to continue to celebrate the literary contribution of young nonfiction writers in this country.”

“The School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University is proud to be working with Express Media to support Australia’s next generation of writers as they tell stories that can change the world,” says Maria Takolander, Associate Professor in Writing and Literature at Deakin University. “The Deakin University Nonfiction Prize in partnership with Express Media recognises how nonfiction stories today are more important than ever.”
