ASA – Submission to National Cultural Policy by 22 August

Recently we reported on the Government’s plans to consult with the arts community to develop a National Cultural Policy. Authors and illustrators can have their say in two ways. You can attend a town hall meeting in your state – the Sydney and Brisbane town hall events will take place this week, and more events will be announced shortly.

Alternatively, you can prepare a written submission. We know that the overwhelming number of written submissions made by authors and industry organisations to the Creative and Cultural Industries Inquiry helped to put your concerns front and centre, and we strongly encourage you to share your experiences once again for this consultation. The ASA will be preparing a submission which will reflect the policy priorities we outlined ahead of the election. Find out more here.

From the National Cultural Policy government site:

This new policy will be shaped by the diverse voices of the Australian arts, entertainment and cultural sector around the 5 goals of Creative Australia which have been distilled to the following pillars:

  • First Nations: recognising and respecting the crucial place of these stories at the centre of our arts and culture.
  • A place for every story: reflecting the diversity of our stories and the contribution of all Australians as the creators of culture.
  • The centrality of the artist: supporting the artist as worker and celebrating their role as the creators of culture.
  • Strong institutions: providing support across the spectrum of institutions which sustain our arts and culture.
  • Reaching the audience: ensuring our stories reach the right people at home and abroad.
