The Leadership Futures Hub at Deakin Business School invites you to join a panel discussion on Breaking the ‘bamboo ceiling’ in Australia.

‘Bamboo ceiling’ refers to barriers that impede persons of Asian background from progressing into leadership positions. According to a 2018 report by the Australian Human Rights Commission, people with non-European (predominantly Asian) ancestry make up 21 per cent of the total population, but hold less than five per cent of senior leadership positions in Australian organisations across business, politics, government and higher education.

We’ve invited five Asian-Australian leaders to share their personal leadership journeys and discuss the challenges of, and possible solutions to, breaking the bamboo ceiling in Australia.

Moderated by Dr Lee Martin, Senior Lecturer in Management, Deakin Business School, the panelists are:

  • Dr Seiji Armstrong, Head of Machine Learning, Trust & Safety Engineering, Google
  • Charishma Kaliyanda, Councillor, Liverpool City Council, and Community Engagement Officer, headspace
  • Stanley Wang, Principal, Abbotsford Primary School
  • Gloria Yuen, Head of Regulatory Response, NAB & Chair of Cultural Inclusion ERG, NAB.
