History on the March
Yes it’s true — history is coming alive at the Bilby Museum on Spellman Street. And some of your favorite TV characters from City Stresses Country Pleasures are going to be captured in this interactive exhibition.
Come along to the opening, it’s going to have everything. There’ll be some of the actors from the show, who have promised an entertaining historical reconstruction of Ben Travers and his capture by the local police. They are getting into the spirit of our Bilby Autumn Gold Festival running at the same time.
Best of all will be the Devonshire teas, home-made sponge cakes and all the cooking secrets from our 19th century forbears.
Those 19th century secrets are captured in the Bilby Historical Society Cookbook, which is going to be launched at the festival. But this is not an ordinary cookbook. It has historical treasures such portly hog, flaming fancies and trotter pie — local delicacies that none of us have made for years.
The producer of City Stresses Country Pleasures, Valerie Geranini, will be launching the book, and explained her interest. ‘One of the most interesting aspects of this town and its district is your history, a sense of an old town underneath the one we all see. That’s part of the charm we want to capture in our series.’
The book contains lots of old photos, and of course recipes, but most of all there are histories from early letters and the recorded impressions of life here in Bilby in the old days.
3BBR will be there on the day, to interview some of our older residents and capture some more of the history.
Where: come along to the museum on Spellman St from 10am on Saturday 11th March.
All enquiries to Myfanwy Fallenby of Bilby Historical Society (check her website for contact details). BHS is to be congratulated on their new exhibition space at the museum.
