Family Fitness First for Bilby

New leisure centre proposal
The family that plays together gets fitter — and that’s the purpose of our proposed new leisure centre.
It’s more than a leisure centre. This will become the heart of our active community. Bilby prides itself on the outdoor sports held at the Sporting Spot, this new leisure centre will enable our young athletes to get themselves fit out of season as well!
But it’s not just for the young ones. There will be programs for all ages, and competitive memberships to encourage the whole family to participate.

There will be a competition-size gymnasium for basketball, indoor soccer, netball and badminton, plus a 25 metre indoor swimming pool. The council will run swimming programs for the local families, plus swimming lessons and competitions for the local schools.
There’s also childcare facilities and a party function room, plus four gym/aerobics spaces. But best of all, there will be an extensive exercise facility, with treadmills, exercise equipment, weights and guided training programs led by experts. It will be open from early to late – you’ll have no excuse!
This is an exciting initiative, made possible by the VicHealth Special Grants Fund, to encourage healthy lifestyles and decrease childhood obesity. As Mayor Henry Agostini stated, ‘our proposal indicated that the focus would be on working on fitness for the whole community. We have an ageing population but lots of new families coming in too. So we want this facility to cater for everyone!’
The football and netball clubs are already keen to book up the weights facilities for their off-season fitness programs! There is also interest from local physiotherapists and chiropractors to share the rooms available for clinics.
The plans have been finalised, and construction will commence at the old carpark behind the Grandview Hotel in three weeks. The construction company is Tringling Brothers, who helped renovate the Sporting Spot a few years back. Tringling is looking for some casual labour, and can be contacted on 53555 11111 or mobile 0444 445 555. The finish date is provisionally listed as April next year — so look out Bendalong Football and Netball Club, after April there’ll be no beating our teams!
