Update on the Burwood Library refurbishment
If you have visited our Burwood Campus recently, you’ll know that a lot of work is being done to create even more useful, dynamic spaces for you to study and collaborate. Burwood Library is the busiest building on campus, and now that we’re open 24 hours on level 2, we want to make sure you have plenty of comfortable areas to work any time of the day or night.
We do our best to schedule the noisiest work during off-peak hours, but please note that over the coming months, there will be some extra noise in the library as we continue the work on the refurbishment. If you’re visiting Burwood Library and want to find the quietest space possible, please feel free to ask one of our staff at the service desk. They will be able to point you to the areas where there is less work happening that day.
What does the refurbishment include?
- Increased seating including single desks, booth seating, quiet spaces and group study tables
- New amenities including gender neutral and unisex accessible toilets, and more toilet facilities throughout the library
- An after-hours tea point for students, complete with a new vending machine
- A Changing Places facility to meet the needs of people with disabilities
What’s happening now?
1. New desks are coming in
Several shelves have been taken down and new furniture is arriving next week. You can expect some extra noise as the furniture is built and installed on all three levels. It’ll be worth it, though – there will be 100+ new desks on level 1, 120+ on level 2 and nearly 60 on level 3!
2. The service desk is changing
The service desk is being replaced with more personal service pods that will allow you to talk to staff one-on-one. The return chutes outside the library will be closed for a bit, so please return your books inside until they reopen. While the new service pods are being built, you can get help from staff at the new temporary service desk just past the art gallery.
3. Holds and reserves have shifted
The holds and reserves shelves have temporarily moved from next to the service desk to the new shelving by the stairs. If you’re not sure where to go, just follow the signs once you get to campus, or ask for help from any one of our staff.
What else should I be aware of?
Burwood Library will be closed from 8am to 5pm on Saturday 15 December. This is due to a power outage that will affect several buildings on campus, including the library. Our doors will reopen after 5pm, and our normal weekend staffed hours will resume on Sunday 16 December.
