Ethical and responsible use of genAI tools for research

GenAI tools have the potential to streamline aspects of research; however, it is essential to consider their limitations and engage with them in an ethical and responsible manner. Read on for a closer look at two matters that are currently in the spotlight.

Latest guidance from Deakin’s Executive

In recent weeks, a new genAI model called DeepSeek was assessed by the Australian Government as an ‘unacceptable risk’ to Australia’s national security.

After careful consideration of the issues and risks, Deakin has determined that the following principles will be applied across the University with immediate effect.

With respect to generative AI models broadly:

With respect to DeepSeek:

Further details can be found in the email sent from Iain Martin, Vice-Chancellor and Peter Auhl, Chief Information and Digital Officer to all staff on 12 February 2025.

Use of copyrighted or licensed information with genAI tools

Care needs to be taken when using tools such as Copilot or Elicit that offer the ability to upload documents. Uploading copies of full-text journal articles to these tools is generally a copyright infringement and breaches our subscription licences.

Articles published under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 licence (or earlier versions) are permissible, but please note other types of Creative Commons licences may not be appropriate. For further assistance, please contact the Copyright Office [email protected].

Coming changes to EBSCOhost user interface (UI)

EBSCOhost, the platform we use to access many of our databases at Deakin, is getting a new user interface (UI). Originally scheduled for February, this update has now been moved to June to give our users more time to become familiar with the changes. This update, inspired by user research and feedback, will bring a fresh look and new functionality. It will impact databases, including:

You can preview the new interface here.

What changes should I be aware of?

One of the key features of the new interface is the new user Dashboard, which will replace Folders and Custom Folders. If you have created Custom Folders or have Saved Searches, please follow these instructions to access your work in the new interface.

Where can I find more information?

Please view this Library blog post Coming changes to the EBSCOhost Library Search interface for further information, including a full list of all impacted databases and links to a series of short how-to videos to help you navigate the various functions in the new interface.

Open Journals at Deakin updates

We are delighted to share an update from Persona Studies, a Deakin community-controlled (diamond) open-access journal. The journal has recently published Volume 10, Issue 2: Fan Personas. The volume examines how a ‘fan persona’ may be used by fans to frame their personal views, beliefs or interpretations within collective spaces.

Persona Studies is a peer-reviewed academic journal that explores the construction of the public self and is hosted by the Library on Open Journals at Deakin.

New Literature Review module: Searching for literature

A brand-new module has just been added to our Literature Review Modules for Health Research series.

Searching for literature is now live and ready to support graduate research students and academics in developing a comprehensive and effective search strategy for their literature reviews.

This module breaks down the key steps in constructing a well-structured, reproducible search strategy – from preparation through to testing and refining. It complements the existing suite of literature review modules and is an excellent resource for those undertaking evidence syntheses and systematic reviews.

Explore the Searching for literature module today, and check out the other modules in the  Literature Review Modules for Health Research series to further develop your literature review skills.

New exhibition highlights Deakin’s research impact

Exhibition asset for 1974 to Now: Deakin at 50 featuring three images from our Archives with different colour overlays

In late 2024, Deakin University marked its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of innovation, impact and community engagement. To honour this milestone, Deakin Library is launching 1974 to Now: Deakin at 50 – a series of three rotating exhibitions presented across the Waurn Ponds, Waterfront and Burwood campuses.

Of particular interest to our researchers is the Shaping the Future: Deakin’s Legacy of Research Exhibition, which allows visitors to experience Deakin’s evolution from an education-first University to a leader in research with real-world impact.

While education remains central to its mission, Deakin has developed a research culture focused on practical applications that benefit communities and shape the future. The exhibition showcases significant research projects across disciplines that have driven innovation and made meaningful contributions to society.

The exhibition will feature at each campus on the following dates:

Burwood: 20 March–25 May

Waterfront: 10 June–20 July

Waurn Ponds: 28 July–7 September
