Important information about the library’s Wiley & Hindawi and Springer Nature open access publishing agreements
Our open access publishing agreements with Wiley/Hindawi and Springer Nature will reach their caps before the end of the year. This may impact eligibility for free open access for some researchers. Please read the important information below about open access options for these publishers for the rest of 2024.
Wiley & Hindawi update
The open access publishing agreement with Wiley is predicted to reach its annual article allocation by the end of September. Changes to the open access approval process are outlined below.
Hybrid journals
For the remainder of the 2024 (October–December), open access publishing in Wiley’s hybrid journals will no longer be possible through our open access publishing agreement. Authors may choose to either:
- publish via the subscription route or
- pay the article processing charge (APC) to make their article open access. Eligible authors choosing to pay will receive a 10% discount.
Hybrid journals represent the majority of Wiley’s journals.
Fully open access journals
Open access publishing in Wiley’s fully open access journals will continue to be supported throughout 2024 for articles submitted before 30 September.
Authors who submit articles to Wiley’s fully open access journals after 30 September will need to pay the necessary charges. A 10% discount will be available to eligible authors.
2025 and beyond
The current agreement with Wiley expires on 31 December 2024. Further details about arrangements for 2025 and beyond will be provided soon.
Springer Nature update
The open access publishing agreement with Springer is predicted to reach its annual article allocation by the second week of October. After this date, there will be no further open access approvals. The cap is finite. Articles can still be published with subscription access, but if authors wish to publish open access, they will need to pay the article processing charge (APC) themselves.
Other pathways to open access
There are multiple pathways to publishing open access, besides our read and publish agreements. These include:
- Green open access: Green Open Access involves self-archiving a version of your non-OA work (i.e. the author-accepted manuscript) in an institutional repository, making it freely available to others. By depositing your author-accepted manuscript in Elements, you increase the accessibility of your research, contribute to the global knowledge base, and adhere to open access mandates from funders. To learn more, explore our Green (Repository) OA guide.
- Diamond open access: Diamond Open Access (OA) journals are free to read and free to publish in, with no article processing charges for authors and no paywalls for readers. Search the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) with the ‘without fees’ filter to find diamond OA journals.
Other open access agreements
Our other open access agreements continue to be available. This means that researchers may still be eligible for free open access through a different journal. Find out more information about them, including which journals are included, on the Open Access: Publishing Agreements guide.

About capped open access publishing agreements
Open access publishing agreements are designed to support the transition to an open scholarly publishing system. They take the library’s existing expenditure on subscriptions and repurpose it to cover both reading and publishing in that publisher’s journals. When you publish in a journal that’s included in one of the agreements, your article will be made open access and you won’t have to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC). Some of our agreements are subject to a limitation (or “cap”) on the number of individual articles that can be made open access per year. Sometimes the cap is reached before the end of the year.
Please contact your librarian with any questions about open access publishing.
