The Australian Government has named three outstanding Deakin University students, including Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and Construction Management students Callan Green, as New Colombo Plan scholars, awarding them a prestigious scholarship to live, study and intern overseas.

In a ceremony yesterday, Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop awarded the scholarships to Deakin students Chris Williams, Callan Green and Rachelle Lynch, who will be pursuing language training, academic studies and community development internships in Hong Kong, India and Malaysia respectively.

These high achieving students are the first Deakin students to ever be awarded this extremely prestigious scholarship, which requires students to go through an intensely competitive application and interview process. Callan will be among 100 New Colombo Plan scholars across the country will be funded for their time overseas in 2017 and will be mentored and supported to become Australian ambassadors and future leaders in the Asian business community.

Callan will travel to India next year, undertaking an exchange program at CEPT University, language training, a local internship and also completing a social impact project with 40K Globe. Callan’s journey to India will not be his first overseas study experience, as he actually negotiated the entire NCP scholar application process while on exchange in South Korea. ‘I am very excited to join the ambitious Australian students engaging with the New Colombo Plan,’ Callan said of his scholarship win. ‘This is an incredible opportunity that I am extremely thankful to be involved with.’

Bachelor of Design (Architecture) student William Rathgeber who also applied for the scholarship made it to the final round but unfortunately was not successful. William will be supported by Deakin to go to CEPT in 2017.
