Staff and students from the School were very fortunate to be given a guided tour of the Australian Islamic Centre construction project in Newport.

The tour was organised by one of our construction management students, Ousamma Abou-Zeid, who is a member of the Newport mosque. The architectural tour perspective was provided by Ali Kaddour, one of our double degree graduates who was assisted by Ali Abou-Zeid, an RMIT civil engineering graduate, with an engineering perspective.

Our tour guides provided not just the factual information about architectural design, structural design and construction process but also gave an interesting and well informed insight into the community engagement process and what the mosque means to the local Islamic community. The building was designed by Glenn Murcutt and has featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery Victoria as well as on ABC radio and TV programs.

It is a wonderful building, requiring complex construction solutions and all who attended learnt a great deal and are keen to return to see the completed building. We thank Ousamma for his efforts in arranging our visit.
