Visibility as Epistemic Exploitation

In this paper I argue that calls for “visibility” as part of anti-racist measures commit a form of epistemic exploitation. In particular, I argue that through a complex understanding of what epistemic exploitation amounts to, we can see how measures intended to combat racism – for instance, the contact hypothesis, Black faces in White places, or racial role models – place an undue epistemic burden on racial minorities and detracts from less exploitative ameliorative programs.
