“Is Watchdog Journalism Dead? The Need to Redefine Journalism”

Presenter:

Dr Kalinga Seneviratne is a Sri Lanka born journalist, radio broadcaster, television documentary maker and media and international communications analyst. He is the founder of Lotus Communication Network and a development communication consultant. He was Head of Research at the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) in Singapore and has taught radio production, international communications and journalism to students in Australia and Asia.  In 1987 he won a UN Media Peace Award for a series broadcast on Australian community radio titled “We Don’t Want No Peace” looking at the relationship between rich and poor countries. In 1993 he won the Education Award from the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia for his services to the Australian community radio sector. His latest book ‘Myth of Free Media and Fake News in the Post-Truth Era’ was published by SAGE in January 2020. His edited publication “Mindful Communication for Sustainable Development: Perspectives from Asia” was published by SAGE in 2018.

Description:

Drawing from his recent book Myth of ‘Free Media’ and Fake News in the Post-Truth Era, this talk will present the provocation that the Libertarian media function theory is challenged in the current communication environment, and democracy and human rights are undermined as a result. The talk introduces the audience to a consideration of mindful communication for sustainable development, a project involving a team of Asian Communication scholars trying to introduce training programs to change an adversarial reporting culture to one that is more cooperative and harmony-oriented communications (journalism).
