Political Extremism: Trumpism and the Transmutations of Capital

Bruce Kapferer and Roland Kapferer

The talk will start with the events at the Capitol and extend into the discourse concerning incipient fascism that surrounds it. The larger issue of concern relates to the nature of extremism and its role in the dynamics of socio-political transformations or transmutations. A critical question relates to the emergence of new formations of oppressive authoritarianism exacerbated in the conditions of the pandemic and digitalisation.

This seminar presentation draws upon and extends Bruce and Roland’s recently published essay The Trump Mediation, out now in Arena Quarterly.

Bruce Kapferer is Emeritus Professor Social Anthropology, University of Bergen; Professorial Fellow, Anthropology, University College London; Professorial Fellow, Cairns Institute; Director ERC Advanced Project Egalitarianism. Currently a roving anthropologist and ethnographer with field experience in Africa, South Asia and Australia.

Roland Kapferer is Lecturer, Anthropology, Deakin University; editorial board for Focaal Journal of Global and Historical Anthropology; musician, filmmaker, social philosopher focussing on the anthropology of new technologies.
