What’s on in February – Koorie Heritage Trust

THE KOORIE HERITAGE TRUST IS HERE FOR 2021

WOMINJEKA | WELCOME to all our friends and supporters to the first edition of our What’s On e-newsletter for 2021.

We are pleased to once again be open to the public after 8 long months of closure. While we are conscious that as a community we need to still be aware of our personal health and safety in public spaces, we sincerely hope you will soon be able to visit us in person and once again connect and reconnect with Aboriginal Victoria.

The 8th Koorie Art Show 2020 is currently showing in our ground floor temporary exhibition galleries while The 3rd Koorie Art Show for Kids and Youth is showing in our 1st floor Project Gallery. These exhibitions will close at the end of February so if you wish to see the talent of our many Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, we encourage you to visit as soon as possible. Alternatively, you may wish to check out our exhibition pages. All works in the 8th Koorie Art Show 2020 are available for sale. I wish to once again acknowledge and thank all of our many Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists who have submitted works for the exhibition.

We are gearing up for a massive 2021 with an exhibition program that includes celebrating recent acquisitions to our unique collection of art and artefacts complimented by a range of innovative public programs.

While we are still subject to public health restrictions that limit the number of people that are physically able to be in our building at any one time, we continue to deliver our cultural education program online including our very popular Building Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Program. Keep an eye out also for upcoming announcements on our education cultural tours including an online virtual tour as well as the resumption of our physical onsite tours.

I wish to also acknowledge the hard work of our dedicated Koorie Family History Service staff who continue to deliver confidential client-based genealogy research. Knowing who you are and where you come from is an essential part of identity and pride for Koorie people. Koorie people have been dispossessed of this knowledge through the policies and practices of past governments, including the taking away of children from family and Community. The main purpose of our Koorie Family History Service is to provide members of the Stolen Generations and their descendants with knowledge of their family tree, family history, culture and Community. We view our role as an important part of building pride and creating a sense of wellbeing in the Koorie Community.

While we look forward to welcoming you back to the KHT, based on the current Victorian COVID-19 public safety guidelines, we will continue to have in place a range of public health safety measures to protect all visitors. This means we can only accommodate 20 visitors at any one time in our building and visitors are required to wear a mask. All visitors will also be required to provide their details for contact tracing purposes, and to adhere to the 1.5m social distancing guideline when in our public spaces.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
