Koorie Heritage Trust – What’s on in August

WELCOME | WOMINJEKA

Friends and Supporters

Welcome to the August edition of What’s On at the Koorie Heritage Trust, and our new e-format.

As we enter into the second week of stage 4 restrictions, our thoughts and well wishes go out to our Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities in Melbourne, and also to the wider communities around the state who are back in stage 3 restrictions. We also send our very best wishes to all those individuals and families whose lives may have been directly affected by the virus.

These are certainly unprecedented times, and little did we know that when we initially closed our doors back in March, that we would still be closed in August; but we are in it together and we hope that in our own small way, we are able through our online programming to engage with you in supporting, promoting and celebrating the strong and continuing culture and journey of Aboriginal Victoria.

Please check out all our online activities including our online exhibitions and public programs. For our families out there who are looking for activities to keep our young ones (and young at heart) engaged, please check out our colouring sheets and activities on our KHT Kids’ Club page. We also continue to add to our KHT Voices page where we are capturing the voices of people from our communities during this time.

We thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the KHT in the near future.

BLAK DESIGN

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST OPENS 1 SEPTEMBER 2020

We will shortly be seeking expressions of interest from our mob around Victoria who are interested in participating in our exciting new initiative, Blak Design.

Extending over four years, Blak Design will focus each year on a different design discipline, providing mentoring in design, production, and small business skills to nurture long-term sustainable design practices. The first year will focus on jewellery design and practice, and will involve professional development and mentoring through workshops and tutorials with cultural mentors, design professionals, jewellers and industry practitioners.

Blak Design: KHT Jewellery Program is proudly supported by the Ian Potter Foundation, and has been developed in partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria and RMIT University.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

AFFIRMATION & BLACK CROW BY DAEN SANSBURY-SMITH

We are pleased to be able to extend our current temporary gallery exhibition Affirmation until 15 November. Bringing together some of Victoria’s most exciting multi-disciplinary Indigenous photographers – Paola Balla (Wemba Wemba, Gunditjmara), Deanne Gilson (Wadawurrung), Tashara Roberts (Dja Dja Wurrung, Yorta Yorta, English and German) and Pierra Van Sparkes (Pibbulman), each artist explores the concept of truth in the context of place, ancestral identity and cultural pride. Explore the exhibition in our virtual gallery tour and online catalogue.

We are also proud to present the first ever exhibition of Narungga and Trawoolwaway artist Daen Sansbury-Smith. Black Crow is a metaphor for the wise watchful eye of male Aboriginal role models and their key responsibilities within the community. Black Crow expands on Sansbury-Smith’s representation of Narungga and Palawa stories, art and culture. Explore the exhibition in our virtual gallery. All works are available for sale.

BUILDING ABORIGINAL CULTURAL COMPETENCY

FOR INDIVIDUALS AND SMALL GROUPS

We are leaders in Building Aboriginal Cultural Competency (BACC) through our cultural awareness workshops. Throughout the year, we offer sessions for individuals and small groups. The learning outcomes of our workshops are to: develop awareness of Aboriginal culture and identity; develop awareness of the strengths of Aboriginal culture and people; assist in making the connection and understanding the impact of colonisation and past policy for Aboriginal people today; develop capacity to be more understanding and responsive to Aboriginal peoples and communities; and motivate and support participants in their cultural competence journey.

Dates for the remainder of 2020 are 10 September, 6 October, 11 November and 7 December. Due to COVID-19, all our workshops are conducted online via Zoom.

Bookings are essential.
