KHT Voices

New Additions

Read some fresh inclusions to our collection of essays and interviews giving a platform to Indigenous voices during the time of COVID-19.

This month, we published a number of new essays including Noongar writer Claire G. Coleman; an interview with Wiradgerie (Wiradjuri) Elder, artist and supplier to our shop Aunty Lucy Williams-Connelly; and an interview with Baraparapa Elder, craftsman and shop supplier Uncle Arthur Kirby. You can also view a video piece by Wailwan and Kamilaroi architect and designer Jefa Greenaway speaking on embedding Indigenous placemaking principles into design considerations.

Although restrictions are easing, we are still conscious of our children and young people who may still be at home.

During this time, continue to keep all our young people busy and engaged with Koorie art and storytelling through our online kids’ platform, Koorie Kids. Visit our WEBSITE to download new activity sheets by Wadawarrung artist Deanne Gilson (who is also currently featured in our online exhibition Affirmation) and colouring sheets by Mick Harding (Taungurung).

Support us and make a difference

Dear Friends and Supporters

With the announcement this month of the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, we are excited to be planning the re-opening of the Koorie Heritage Trust in July – an exact date to be announced shortly.

In the meantime, 2020 has proved to be an exceptional year for all of us. But despite these challenging times, we are still here doing what we do best; promoting, supporting and celebrating the continuing journey of our Victorian Aboriginal people and communities, including ensuring building and caring for our unique and irreplaceable Collections of Victorian Aboriginal art and artefacts remain our top priority.

We are pleased to report that despite the trying circumstances of our temporary closure, we have continued to support and showcase our artists, craftspeople, designers and creatives by providing financial support and income including through commissioning new stock from our community suppliers for our shopKOORIE as well as supporting our artists through commissions and our current online exhibition, Affirmation.

We also launched KHT Online, a new digital initiative enabling us to share our unique programs and services. KHT Online includes KHT Voices, for which we commission writers, artists and community members to share their stories of the impact of COVID-19. These are the voices that are rarely heard in our mainstream media, and we intend KHT Voices to become an important historical record of these extraordinary times.

However, when we reopen, the way we live, work and socialise will change. While we have successfully adapted the way we deliver our services to meet this change, the legacy of the COVID-19 temporary closure will continue to impact on the Trust. To enable us to continue to do the work we do best, and to help us make a difference, we seek your support.

For as little as a $2 tax deductible donation, your support will enable us to evolve, adapt and grow in a post-COVID world; continuing to present our programs and services in new and innovative formats while ensuring we continue to represent, support and engage with our Victorian Aboriginal communities in safe and meaningful ways.

Thank you for your support! We truly appreciate any donation you are able to make.

From the Board and Staff of the Koorie Heritage Trust.
