Dr Jose Antonio Gonzalez Zarandona recently co-published with Deakin alumni Dr Ronan Lee (Queen Mary University of London) the article “Heritage destruction in Myanmar’s Rakhine state: legal and illegal iconoclasm” in the International Journal of Heritage Studies.

Dr Jose Antonio Gonzalez Zarandona’s membership to Mexico’s National System of Researchers has been renewed for another two years. Also, he has been recently named Vice-President of Heritage for Peace, a NGO based in Barcelona. Heritage for Peace is a non-governmental organization that supports the cultural heritage sector to safeguard patrimony at risk during times of conflict. In the last years, Heritage for Peace has worked in missions in Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia and in other locations in Europe.

Dr Timothy Neale attended the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC Research Advisory Forum in Hobart on Tuesday 24 September, presenting and discussing findings from the research that he and Dr Will Smith have been conducting on engagements between Aboriginal communities and natural hazards agencies.

Dr Jason Gibson presented his paper Incorporating Museums into Kinship: Experiences from Central Australia at the Council for Museum Anthropology Biennial Conference – Museum Different – held at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology and the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 19-21 September.

A/Prof. Anna Halafoff and Prof. Gary Bouma (Monash) had an opinion piece published in ABC Religion and Ethics on Worldviews Education in Australian schools.

Professor Shahram Akbarzadeh was named by The Australian – 2019 Research magazine Australia’s top researcher in the field of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. Deakin University was also named Australia’s leading institution in the fields of ‘Ethnic & Cultural Studies’, ‘Humanities, Literature & Arts (general)’, and ‘Human Migration’.
