Visiting Professor in Australian Studies, Univ of Tokyo- David Lowe appointed 2019-2020- applications open for 2020-2021
This month, David Lowe commences as the 2019-20 Visiting Professor of Australian Studies, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Centre for Pacific and American Studies, at the University of Tokyo’s Komaba Campus. He will be employed there from mid-September 2019 to late July 2020, on leave without pay from Deakin.
The University of Tokyo created the annual position in 1999, and enjoys funding support from the Australia-Japan Foundation. In addition to teaching at junior undergraduate, senior undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Visiting Professor is expected to develop and expand academic networks across Japan, including with the Australian Studies Association of Japan, and to liaise with the Australian Embassy as appropriate. David has already accepted invitations to give lectures or seminars in Osaka, Tokyo and Seoul. While in Japan, he will also continue research on the history of postwar foreign aid.

The Visiting Professorship in Australian Studies was created in 1999 by the Centre for Pacific and American Studies, The University of Tokyo, to promote a deeper understanding of Australia and its regional engagement. The position is supported by the Australia-Japan Foundation.
Applications are invited from highly qualified Australians with significant academic or public achievement in the fields of Australian studies, history, cultural studies, politics, literary studies, international relations and other relevant areas across the humanities and social sciences. The Visiting Professor in Australian Studies is required to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels; to present conference papers; to conduct research; and to participate in promoting Australian Studies within Japan.
The appointment is for a period of approximately 10 months and will commence early September 2020 or early September 2021. Applicants may be considered for either term or both terms. The Visiting Professor is expected to spend most of the period in Tokyo engaged in research and, during semester, in teaching. All teaching is conducted in English.
