Dr Yamini Narayanan has a new publication and two recent presentations:

  • Narayanan, Y. (2019). Jugaad and informality as drivers of India’s cow slaughter economy. Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space.
  • She was invited to present her paper ‘Jugaad and informality as drivers of India’s cow slaughter economy’ at the Political Animals conference, hosted by the University of Amsterdam, 3-4 July.
  • She also delivered an invited public lecture, hosted by the University of Amsterdam on ‘Hogging the urban: The socio-spatial margins of species and caste in the Indian Smart City’. This is the first public dissemination from her ARC Discovery project ‘Animals and urban planning: Indian cities as Zoöpolises’.

Dr Sean Bowden has published a co-authored paper in the Journal of Applied Philosophy on mob action, mob responsibility and a non-paradigmatic form of punishment for mob-based harms. The article, titled ‘Punishment for Mob‐based Harms: Expressing and Denouncing Mob Mentality’, is available in early view.

A/Prof Melinda Hinkson and Professor Jon Altman published a chapter ‘Lurching between consensus and chaos: Shades of populism in Australian Indigenous Affairs’, in Bruce Kapferer and Dimitrios Theodossopoulos (eds) Democracy’s Paradox: Populism and its Contemporary Crisis, Critical Interventions series, Berghahn, Oxford.

Associate Professor Anna Halafoff was interviewed for a program on Buddhist Women on Ordination and Enlightenment on ABC Radio National’s God Forbid.

She was also a keynote plenary speaker at the inaugural International Conference on Cohesive Societies in Singapore and The Straits Times reported on the panel in an article titled Religious and worldview studies in schools can help strengthen social cohesion, say experts.

Professor Fethi Mansouri was invited to participate at the International Conference on Cohesive Societies (ICCS) held in Singapore from 19 to 21 June 2019. The Conference drew  on the diverse expertise of about 700 international delegates across academia, government, religious groups, and civil society to help shape the future of cohesive societies. The opening address was delivered by HE Halima Yacoub president of Singapore and the keynote address was delivered by HM King Abdullah of Jordan.
