Presentation and publications – Dr Anthony Ware, Dr Costas Laoutides

Dr Anthony Ware was called upon to advise Myanmar’s Independent Commission of Enquiry (ICOE) on 30 January 2019, for a 1.5 hours presentation. The ICOE is investigating the allegations of mass crimes against Myanmar’s Rohingya people over the last year or two. Anthony has been asked to assist with several aspects of their investigations over the next 12-24 months. The ICOE was recently appointed by the Myanmar government, and the Myanmar military has pledged full cooperation. The commission includes Ambassador Kenzo Oshima, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs & Emergency Relief and former Japanese Ambassador to Australia, and is chaired by Ambassador Rosario Manalo, former chair of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and former Philippines Deputy Foreign Minister.

Dr Anthony Ware & Dr Costas Laoutides’ book, Myanmar’s Rohingya Conflict (Oxford UP & Hurst), was featured for the Book Review Roundtable in the latest issue of Asia Policy (Scopus Q1),  the journal of the US National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) based in Washington. Four eminent scholars wrote detailed reviews of the book (all most favourable) and Anthony & Costas contributed a lengthy reply essay entitled ‘Is There No Resolution in Myanmar’s Rohingya Conflict?’. All 4 reviews and the response essay are available (for free) from https://www.nbr.org/publication/asia-policy-14-1-january-2019.
