October 2021 Researcher and HDR training sessions now open for registration
We are excited to announce a series of training sessions running from 25–30 October aimed at assisting you with further developing your research skills. These sessions will take place virtually to allow researchers from any location to attend simultaneously.
Find out more about each session below and follow the links to register.
Session 1: Copyright and your thesis
Monday 25 October, 2–3pm
This session will provide an overview of the key copyright issues that you will need to consider for your thesis. The topics covered will be helpful for HDR students at any stage of their candidature.
Session 2: Develop your literature search skills
Wednesday 27 October, 10–11.30am
Refining your keyword search strategy is essential for your literature review – but have you considered expanding your search with other tools?
This session will focus on citation index searching, next generation citation mapping tools, and using ProQuest TDM Studio to apply topic modelling and geographic analysis to the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database. This workshop is targeted at new or recently commenced Higher Degree by Research students; however, staff or other researchers seeking a refresher are also welcome to attend.
Session 3: Introduction to EndNote20
Wednesday 27 October, 1:30–2.30pm
EndNote is fantastic software that helps you manage your references and cite them in your document as you write. Among other things, the software can import sources from databases and comes with many referencing styles. It is the perfect tool for extensive research projects or literature reviews.
The library recommends EndNote for researchers, HDR students and research administrators. If you are an undergraduate, we strongly recommend you start by reviewing the Deakin Guide to Referencing. It will save you a lot of time to learn how to reference before attempting to use reference management software.
Session 4: NVivo for Literature Review – a workflow demonstration
Friday 29 October, 10–11.30am
Are you working on a literature review? Join us for a demonstration of how to analyse your literature search results using NVivo.
During this workshop we will discuss:
- importing source documents to NVivo
- coding your source documents for themes
- querying your source documents.
