Sustainable Fishing Families workshop pilot

Workshop One:

The first workshop in the pilot of the Sustainable Fishing Families program was run on the 20th and 21st April, with great success. The program was generously hosted by the Bellarine Community Health Ltd., in Drysdale, Victoria. The workshop was catered by local cafe, Picnic Time.

Seven fishers participated in the workshop, which involved one-on-one health checks, and a series of health literacy sessions, including a trip to the local supermarket. Participants – and researchers! – also set health goals for themselves to work towards for the next workshop.

While those involved in the program benefited from the health program, the program itself was markedly improved by the insights and suggestions of those who brought their experience and knowledge of the fishing industry to the workshop.

Workshop Two:

The second workshop was held on the 12th October, with 100% of participants repeating their health assessments. The benefits achieved by those who were involved were immense, and ranged from weight loss, to enhanced safety practices, to better strategies for winding down. Certainly, the group was healthier and more productive than they (we!) were at the first workshop.

Workshop Three:

The third workshop was held on the 19th April, 2018, with 100% of participants repeating their health assessments. Ongoing health benefits were observed by participants as well as lifestyle changes and adaptations to safety behaviours.

The report outlining more details about the pilot results will be available before Christmas. Check back here for details.

Based on the success of the pilot, two more programs are planned for Victoria – we are currently seeking expressions of interest from groups who would like to be involved (for free). Please contact Tanya on 0427889917 if you’re interested.
