When is Orientation held?

Orientation for Trimester 3 (T3) 2023 is over three weeks:

  • Pre-OWeek: 23 – 27 October 2023
  • OWeek: 30 October – 3 November 2023
  • Week 1: 6 – 10 November 2023

All Orientation information sessions will be held online.

On campus, there’ll be information desks set up, plus we’ll be running campus tours, social events and activities to welcome you to the Deakin community, connect you to your peers and help you become familiar with campus services and support.

Whether you’re an undergraduate, postgraduate or research student, you’re going to want to attend Orientation and OWeek! It is the perfect welcome to university life at Deakin.

Visit the Orientation Itinerary to view details of on-campus events and register for each of your sessions. In your sessions, you can meet fellow students and staff and engage with a number of support services offered by the University. Make sure to check out the Orientation Itinerary for more information.

What is my Orientation Itinerary and how do I build it?

Your Orientation Itinerary will list all of the events you should attend during OWeek. Your Orientation Itinerary will be available from 5pm Wednesday 11 October 2023.

To build your Orientation Itinerary, simply select whether you are online or on-campus, your faculty, student type, pathway (Deakin College) or non-pathway (for all other students) and course from the fields, and then click ‘find’.  You’ll be able to download your Orientation Itinerary and register for your sessions.

How can I view my Orientation Itinerary?

View your itinerary using our Orientation Itinerary web app.

Do I need to register for Orientation sessions?

You must register for all Orientation sessions as this will enable us to send you a link to the online session. You’ll find the registration details in the session description in the Orientation Itinerary.

What Orientation sessions do I need to attend?

We strongly recommend you attend all of your Orientation sessions as they are designed to help you make a great start at Deakin. Most sessions have been designed with an interactive component to allow you to become familiar with tools, meet academics or peer mentors, and explore online study spaces.

By generating your itinerary in the itinerary web app you’ll be able to view the listing of Orientation sessions that are required, recommended or available to you.

If you’re unable to attend a session, we’ll be recording sessions for students to view at a later date.

Once I’ve registered where do I get the session Zoom link to join the session?

Once you have registered for your Orientation sessions you will get a confirmation email with details about the session and some resources you can access prior to your session.

You will then receive the following reminders:

  • 2 days prior to the session – a reminder email with more details for their session.
  • 2 hours prior to the session – a second reminder email with a link to Eventbrite where you can join the session.
  • 10 minutes prior to the session – an email invite to join now with a link to Eventbrite where you can join the session.

Troubleshooting accessing your online Orientation session links

Eventbrite:

  1. We recommend registering with your Deakin email account to avoid any account issues. If you used a personal email address and already have an Eventbrite account (you have used Eventbrite to register for an event previously) you will need to login into this account to access your session. If you cannot remember your password, you will need to reset your Eventbrite password to access your account. We recommend joining your session ten minutes prior to the session start time, so you are ready to go.
  2. All enrolled students will have access to UniStart (if you are an undergraduate) or Preparing to Succeed (if you are a postgraduate) within two days of enrolment, and this is where you will access your recording after the session. You will also receive an email with a link to your recording.
  3. On-campus Orientation events and activations including DUSA events are also listed in your Orientation Itinerary. You will need to register for some on-campus events and activations as well.

Zoom:

  1. Zoom links do not require a password. We suggest students download Zoom to their devices prior to the session.
  2. Frequently asked Zoom questions

Is Orientation mandatory?

We understand that it’s not always possible to attend all (or sometimes any) sessions and activities during Orientation. However, the sessions are designed to be informative and engaging and to ensure you have the information you need to get off to a great start at Deakin. We recommend you get to as many of the sessions in your itinerary as you can, even if they’re not compulsory.

Please note: If you have a compulsory induction session and you’re unable to attend, please contact your faculty for specific advice.

What if I arrive late and miss OWeek and Orientation?

We’re recording all online Orientation sessions. If you are an undergraduate, your recordings will be available in UniStart under ‘Orientation Sessions’ tab. If you are a postgraduate your recordings will be available in Preparing to Succeed under the ‘Orientation sessions’ tab. All students are automatically enrolled in either UniStart or Preparing to Succeed depending on their level of study. Each of these Orientation resources also has a range of helpful guides with study tips and spaces to connect with your learning community.
