A message from the Vice-Chancellor

Welcome to this December issue of dKin Difference, my first as Vice-Chancellor and the final edition for 2019.

Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude for your generous support of Deakin University and its endeavours. The role of universities within the community is more important than ever, and at Deakin, our people have always been at the centre of our story. We could not do what we do without you.

I have inherited a university in extraordinarily good health and we are confident that Deakin is well positioned for the future. I am delighted to have the opportunity to share with you my vision of the next stage in our journey, and the vital role philanthropy will play in addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead.

This year, Deakin continued to build on its reputation as a high-performing university in research and education. In the coming years, our ambition is to expand and deepen our national and international connections, and be widely known as an institution that is approachable and transparent – to government, the business sector, other universities and community groups. We want, and need, our partners to be personally invested in our shared success.

Through these purposeful partnerships, we are aiming to increase our impact in research and innovation across several key areas that will directly benefit communities: health and well-being; enabling a sustainable world; advancing society and culture; future industries; and ensuring a secure and prosperous Australia. There are so many opportunities to be involved.

There is power in the act of giving – no matter the size. Philanthropy builds strong, continuing relationships between donors and the University. Donors are often knowledgeable about what we are trying to achieve, and share our values. At Deakin, we want to inspire a network of giving that sees itself as an active part of our mission to create transformative, positive change – a community that serves communities. A strong culture of philanthropy, and direct engagement, is a large part of what makes Deakin distinctive.

Thank you for being part of our journey. I wish you, your families and friends a joyful festive season, and look forward to working with the Deakin community in the New Year.
