This is an in-person event at Deakin Downtown.
Who should attend?
The workshops are targeted at new or recently commenced HDR students, from any discipline background. Students further in their candidature, or research staff looking to refresh their skills or learn new techniques are also very welcome.
What preparation is required?
There is a 20 minute preparation video that you will need to complete before the training day. This will ensure you are set up with a detailed search plan to use in the literature review workshops. Please access the video on Deakin Air.
What should I bring?
Parts of the workshops involve hands-on exercises – please bring along a laptop.
Program:
- 09:30 – 10:00 Registration, tea and coffee provided
- 10:00 – 11:15 Literature Review 1: Plan your search and find literature (with 15 min question time)
- 11:15 – 11:35 Break, tea and coffee provided
- 11:35 – 12:45 Literature Review 2: Find key papers and authors (with 15 min question time)
- 12:45 – 13:30 Lunch (not provided – BYO or plenty of options nearby)
- 13:30 – 14:30 Introduction to Research Data Management
- 14:30 – 15:00 Wrap up and questions
Learning objectives
After completing this workshop you will be able to:
- Plan and document your search
- Find literature using online and library resources, including theses and research methods
- Identify and find key papers and authors on your topic using citation searching techniques
- Understand introductory data management principles and best practice
- Set up and use Deakin approved research data storage options, including Research Data Store.
How do I get to Deakin Downtown?
Deakin Downtown is located a short walk from Southern Cross train station. Head up Collins St in the opposite direction from the CBD. When you reach the Collins Square complex at 727 Collins St, enter the revolving doors for Tower 1 & 2. Follow the signs for Tower 2 through the lobby and go up the escalator marked “Floors 6-16”. At the bank of elevators, select Floor 12 (Deakin University) and you will be directed to an elevator.
